  A  small  wooden  pipe,  having  six  or  more  holes,  and  a 
  mouthpiece  inserted  at  one  end  It  produces  a  shrill  sound, 
  softer  than  of  the  piccolo  flute,  and  is  said  to  have 
  superseded  the  old  recorder.
